THE VICTIM OF A HIT-AND-RUNpicked up and let down connor samuels wasn’t the sort of person who was going to go throughout life complaining about everything that went wrong and every shit thing that had happened to him. and being who he was, hell, there could be quite a long, numerous, and detailed list of all the shit he’d dealt with in his life and still had in it. however, he wasn’t one of those people. connor was more of a person who looked on the brighter side of life, or well, most of the time. really, he had to be more like that. he had to set a good example for his girl, avery. his beautiful three-year-old daughter, the love of his entire life. the only one he would do and would sacrifice anything for. if he was bitter, if he was rude, or obnoxious, mean, a jerk, avery would be growing up with even less than she already had. the little girl was already going throughout her childhood without a mother, after all, and she didn’t need to lose her father, the only one she had left. connor meant it when he said he would do anything for his daughter, he truly did. after all, what else was there for him to live for at this point?
it helped, really, that connor already liked kids and wanted to work with them for the rest of his life. currently he was in his junior at NYU, studying elementary education to become a first-grade teacher. most likely first grade, anyway. it was sort of funny, really, how he’d come to that conclusion by talking to someone he’d just met for a few hours. sure, the roots of the idea had already been in his head, but for them to be finalized so quickly? it was odd. that girl, though, josie, there was something different about her. their conversation had started out on a bad note. she’d flirted with him, alluded so some things that connor wasn’t looking for or comfortable with at all, really, and he’d sort of snapped at her and they were angry and nothing seemed good. but then they’d started talking legitly, and talked more about what they were doing with their lives, and then connor had spilled his past. he never went and told anyone about how he’d been hurt in the past, and then just like that, he’d went and told a random stranger, one who had given the impression of wanting nothing more than getting into his pants. there had to be something different about her, then. connor wouldn’t have given in so easily if there wasn’t. maybe, just maybe, this could lead to a friendship, something connor hadn’t chanced with many females since his breakup.
and somehow, they’d made plans for josie to come over to connor and avery’s place for the afternoon. they were going to make these fruit cube things, and honestly, connor was a little excited for it. avery was sitting on the kitchen floor, pretending to cook with a pot and a wooden spoon, and connor stood at the counter, setting everything up — the fruit, basically, and making sure he had every kind here that they’d want or need. it was nearing two o’clock, the time when josie said she would come over. hopefully she wasn’t late. for his sake, yes, but also for avery’s; connor had gotten his daughter rather excited when he said someone was coming over, and a girl, too. josie was going to be targeted as a playmate whether she knew it or not. connor was slightly worried about that, actually; not everyone was a children person, and avery was the sort of little girl who believed that everyone should be without any exceptions. she would grow on her, though; connor was certain of that. she always grew on everyone. after meticulously rearranging the fruit on the counter, his slight nerves at having a female in his apartment evident now, connor turned to avery. a smile slowly spread across his face, one that always did when he looked at his daughter. “whatcha cookin’?” he asked her, kneeling down in front of her, and listening to her blabber. “mac ‘n cheese, daddy, uhcourse. new fwend woves mac ‘n cheese.” and connor just smiled more. yeah, josie would like her. who couldn’t? biased father thinking or not.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Change wasn’t always something people wanted to go through. Hell, most people said it was good, but also said, never change for anyone. It kind of contradicted itself. Yeah, you could change, but not realize you do it for other people. So really, by changing, you are really just pleasing people. Some people like quiet people, so by changing that single thing, different people might start talking to you. It was a twisted way of life. Change in Josie Barrett’s life was already happening. Not once, in her life, had she been standing in front of stuffed animals just staring, trying to pick the best for a little girl. Not once, did she think s he’d be here. Josie and small children was like putting a lion with a kangaroo. And the small child was the lion. Josie was more afraid of children than she was afraid of clowns, bugs, death, STD’s and many other things. Yet here she was, shopping among many stuffed animals for the ‘perfect’ one for a little girl she had yet to meet. It was probably humanly impossible for her to actually pick a stuffed animal for this little girl, but she would try her best, damn-it. She wanted to do something right.
It was quite simple how she came about this little girl. See, Josie got on IM like she always did when bored and began talking to a young man. Well more like, threw herself upon her through her virtual words. Well, after so long, the two actually, got along. And well, low behold, he invited her to his place to make fruit ice cubes. Which really, wouldn’t take long. But it was exciting. She hadn’t had a friend, of the male variety, that wasn’t just for sex, in years. And this guy wasn’t in this for sex, he made sure of it. And Josie was surprisingly fine with that. She was attracted to him, no doubt. But she really, was tired of not having male friends who only wanted her for her body. Letting out a soft sigh, she ran a hand through her hair. “I liked dinosaurs as a kid…hopefully she does too..” Grabbing the little plush blue dinosaur out of the bin, she made her way to check-out.
Content with her decision, Josie made her way towards the direction of Connor’s house. Reading the address over and over that she wrote on her arm so she wouldn’t lose it. Knowing her, she’d lose it and then it’d seem like she stood him up. Josie was notorious for that, no doubt, but there was also a child involved in this. She had to hold it up for her. Yeah, she’d keep telling herself that one. Do it for Avery. All for Avery. You spent good money on a dinosaur for her, she’ll love you. Looking at his door, she took a long drawn out breath before lightly pounding her fist on his door three times. She cling to the dinosaur in between her arms like a little kid, waiting for the door to open. She heard noises inside, that was a good sign, right? Of coarse it was. It meant they were alive. Not to mention here.
While waiting all Josie could think about was about Connor. Sadly, Avery was overtaken by thoughts of that sexy beast. He was nice to her, even though he knew she was a worthless, filthy, slut who was going no where in life. He offered to help her with school. He was nice to her and invited her to his house. After only a little while of talking, he did all that for her. Without a second thought. Connor, seemed like a good guy. And she didn’t want to ruin any possible friendship with his guy by ‘making a move’. She had to keep calm for tonight. Just one night. She could do it. Hopefully.

THE VICTIM OF A HIT-AND-RUNpicked up and let down they tell you not to have kids when you’re young. they tell you you’re going to regret it, that it’s costly, and you won’t be able to accomplish anything else with your life. the thing is, they never let you know any of the good things. there was no way connor would ever sacrifice a single memory of his life with avery. things had only improved since she’d arrived. and honestly, connor didn’t think he could ever love a thing in this entire world more. a world without his daughter would be beyond bland. it would be horrible, to be honest. his little girl was his world. sure, there may have been a few moments here and there where he almost, for a moment, wished they’d made a different decision. a tiny sliver of him wanted to be like other guys his age, other college kids. he wanted to party, he wanted to have fun. he wanted to be able to keep his television locked on MTV, rather than PBS. he wanted to spend money on booze and not on stuffed animals. and he wanted to be able to wake up in the morning without seeing the features of his ex-fiancé looming in front of his face. of course, his daughter did have to look like her. she had to have the same beautiful wavy blonde hair, the same nose shape. connor couldn’t look at avery without seeing her face reflected in it at least once a day. and every time that it happened, it was still painful.
but yet, in spite of all of that, he regretted nothing. there was still absolutely no way in hell that he would ever trade his memories, he would ever trade his life for one more usual. in all honesty, connor loved kids. he wouldn’t have been going into elementary education otherwise, obviously. he didn’t mind all that much having to change so many diapers, having to spend so many sleepless nights trying to rock his baby to sleep. when she had been here to help, yeah, that made things a little easier to handle, but connor was honestly happier now without her. well... no. he wasn’t happy, not really. it still hurt, knowing what she’d done to him. knowing that she’d agreed to marry him when she was cheating on him the entire time. he knew wholeheartedly that he was better off now, he really did; but there was still a part of him that missed her. connor had really thought that he was in love; he’d thought that she was the one. what happened had happened so unexpectedly. and now, he didn’t think he’d ever be able to love again. hell, he wasn’t so sure love even existed. it was all just lust. it was all fake. there was no such thing as true love. or love in general. just a hoax, something created by hallmark to keep a profit coming in.
connor really had a lot of bitter feelings for being a mostly positive, happy person. well, alright, he wasn’t happy and he wouldn’t lie about being such. he was typically positive, though. he had to be, for his daughter’s sake. his daughter who was currently cooking faux mac ‘n cheese for someone who... had just arrived. connor looked up as he heard a knock on the door, and avery squealed. he smiled a bit at her and ruffled her hair before getting to his feet. “better finish cooking!” connor watched with a grin forming on his face as her little hands starting flipping about frantically as she attempted to stir the food in her saucepan. see, it was the moments like this... he walked to the door, his heart pounding as he did so. wait... why was that happening? connor hesitated for a moment before he pulled the door open and.. wow. okay, he could see why she had been acting so flirty towards him. when a woman looked like josie did, she had every right to attempt to hit on whoever she felt like. this girl here, she.. she was hot. she was really hot. connor cleared his throat and gave her a gentle smile. “hey.. come in.” he stepped back so she could do just that. “sorry if it’s a little messy, i haven’t had time to clean in a while...” oh, shit, what if she was a clean freak or something? dammit.. connor was just worrying too much.
