synesthesia, synaesthesia & synesthesiae
Synesthesia is a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. In other words, the senses are mixed together so the individual can see and/or taste sound as colors or taste through touch.
Lorren’s case is on the more severe spectrum, able to see sound and written and spoken words as an assigned color. He is also able to taste sound though this is something he had grown accustomed to ignoring. There are certain foods that Lorren refuses to eat because he doesn’t like the taste combined with the color he sees the food as. Lorren’s synesthesia gives him an impeccable memory and understanding of sound.
red, anger & fury
commonly seen: the piano note A0, lightning, metal scraping metal, raspy voices.[/ul]
To some red is the color of strength and power but to Lorren it is rage and danger and anything in between. He desperately hates anything that’s the color red. To him it’s assaulting to his eyes and associated with almost everything negative. Being a rather calm person, he doesn’t like the harshness of the color and the emotions he links to it. Lorren is not an angry person, a lover not a fighter, so naturally he has distaste for it. He would rather sit And hold hands.
orange, energy & desire & distrust
commonly seen: when people lie, French horns, cell phones, rustling leaves.[/ul]
For Lorren the emotions associated with orange varies on its shade. On a general note it is one of the most common colors he sees, not his favourite but he doesn’t dislike it either. He sees it a lot in the voices of hyper and outgoing people, linking it to feelings of energy and strength. He would describe a regular orange as him on a regular day, happy and creative and determined and stimulated. However, darker oranges are what he sees when people are lying, which is how he can tell so easily. Everyone has signs of telling a lie, be it getting sweaty or a twitch or whatever. For Lorren it is a dark orange tint around the band of someone’s voice, giving him the illusion of being a very perceptive person. Other shades of orange prominent with Lorren can be seen as desire and lust, something he feels a lot of. The following is a list of the basic colors and what they mean to Lorren in terms of who he is.
yellow, joy & intellect & energy
commonly seen: flutes, squeaky voices, cats, striking a match, his mother.[/ul]
This is an easy one, also seen quite commonly though it’s not as common in Lorren himself. It’s rare for him to be particularly chipper and cheerful, though he enjoys the happiness of others. It is something he would much rather see in someone than experience himself. That isn’t to say that he doesn’t enjoy being happy, he’s just not someone who is very optimistic and vivacious. Yellow always makes him think of his mother because she’s such a bubbly person. Lorren basks in the cheerfulness of others like you would in sunlight.
green, harmony & tranquility & greed
commonly seen: violins, opening cans, rodent squeaks.[/ul]
Green is almost always associated with nature, symbolising growth and vision and endurance. That is no different for Lorren, who represents the color green a lot. It isn’t his most dominant color, but it is certainly a common one. To Lorren green is rather tranquil, calm like he is and rather at peace. Lorren isn’t a very high strung person. He is very calm and collected so it represents him well. The negative aspect of the color green also represent Lorren quite accurately. Greed and jealousy, two emotions he tends to feel a lot, can been seen in darker shades. Lorren is a rather jealous person when it comes to relationships and while he tries not to let this side of him show through it is still there and still very evident. He is also quite spiteful, which also falls under the color green.
blue, stability & loyalty & confidence
commonly seen: C sharp, clicking high heels, drumming finger, his father.[/ul]
The most dominant color that makes up who Lorren is prominent among both Lorren and his father and that would be blue. He takes after his dad quite a bit so it’s no wonder blue reminds Lorren of his pops. Blue is the color of trust and loyalty and faith, traits that are the center of who Lorren is. Lorren is a man you can trust your life with, faithful to who he is and the ones that he loves until the very end. The concept of breaking someone’s trust is appalling to Lorren, who has been raised with strong and good morals his entire life. He trusts too easily despite jealous tendencies and even when people hurt him he remains loyal to them. He can’t let go of these feelings easily. Blue is, like green, also rather tranquil and understanding, also qualities you can find in Lorren.
purple, eccentric & ambition & creativity
commonly seen: most of the g scale, harps, technology buzzing, whistling kettles.[/ul]
For Lorren purple makes him think of Willy Wonka, so he associates it with the more eccentric sort of emotions and feelings. Rather than representing feelings of power and royalty, he sees it as ambition and uniqueness. Lorren’s synesthesia alone makes him unique, so it’s no wonder this is one of his favourites to see in the world. While Lorren is very much an idiot with most school subjects, he is a creative genius when it comes to music and that is how purple most represents him. Quiet and conserved most of the time, Lorren becomes a mad scientist sort of person when he is struck with inspiration for a song.
pink, independence & vivacious & sympathetic
commonly seen: b flat, sneezes, ticking clocks, oboes, his mother.[/ul]
Also closely associated to his mother, for it is her favourite color, pink is what most people would typically see it as. It is a very girly color to him, as it is for most people. It’s rare for him to see it in the voice of a male but it does happen from time to time. To Lorren pink is a very outgoing color, so it’s not one you will find in him very often. He isn’t a very bubbly person so he sees it more in others than himself, much like yellow. However, pink is also sympathetic, something Lorren feels far too much of. He has a big heart that is worn on his sleeve, which is quite easy to take advantage of. Lorren can’t help but want to help people who are hurting or in need so he gets hurt a lot himself.
brown, reliable & sadness
commonly seen: cellos, seagulls, keyboard clicks, flushing toilet, if someone is upset.[/ul]
For Lorren brown is often a negative color, associated with sadness and longing. He tends to get like this every now and then being so far away from home. It is the color of his frustration when he can’t get his English right, or the color of his irritation when a song doesn’t sound the way that he wants. It never lasts long for him, he’s a pretty easy guy to cheer up when he’s down in the dumps.
black, mystery & formality
commonly seen: dreamy voiced people, authoritative voices, shuffling paper.[/ul]
To most people black is mysterious and dark and gloomy, which is certainly the case for how Lorren sees it. It’s rare for him to see a voice that is entirely black and for the most part is lines the colored bands to show depression or mystification. For him it is strong, but a negative sort of strong. He can see if someone is depressed by how dark the color of their voice is, though it can also be elegant and authoritative. It’s not a color one sees in him very often and is another one of his disliked colors, for it is also assaulting to his vision. Black brings him down with how gloomy it is and acts as a void, sucking up all of the colors around it.
white, innocence & perfection
commonly seen: a camera shutter, whistling, doves, baby giggles.[/ul]
This one is quite obvious and universal: purity and innocence. Lorren isn’t really either of those things. While he is good natured, he has made mistakes in his life that separate him from the “prudish” side of things. He tries to be a good person but everyone slips up every now and then. To see a voice that is pure white is very rare for him; is usually liens the edges of the colored bands like the dark orange of a lie.
